Pollen - An Introduction

Pollen - An Introduction

Bee pollen, huh? If you’re not even sure what it is, don’t feel bad. You’re probably amongst the majority. But that’s where we come in! We are your bee pollen educators, able to answer any questions you may have about the super food (or at least try our best!). The first thing you should know is that pollen is a superfood. It’s packed FULL of vitamins and nutrients — chief among them, protein! — and you can read all about them here.

The second thing you might find interesting is that pollen can help fight and immunize against seasonal allergies. Consuming bee pollen that was purchased from your local beekeeper is beneficial because of the many environmental allergens that are contained in the bee pollen, but in very small doses. Your body will eventually work up an immunity against the local pollens, and just like that, your allergies should bother you no more!

Another thing to mention is that some people are actually allergic to bee pollen itself. Be careful if you have never tried pollen before — only consume a small dose and see how your body reacts. Typically, if someone is already allergic to honey, there’s a good chance they might be allergic to pollen, as well.

Lastly, be experimental! The traditional ways to enjoy pollen include taking it with water (as you would a vitamin) or adding it to smoothies. But there are so many other foods that can be garnished or topped with bee pollen, as long as you use your imagination! (I like to think of pollen in the same category as chia or hemp seeds). For example, this lady suggests using pollen granules as a topping on dark chocolate, among many other cool ideas.
